About Us

Step Up Dance Group is a small, friendly, dance focused group. We run weekly dance sessions of Ballet, Modern Theatre dance and Tap. We run sessions during term time and fun dance workshops in half term and summer holidays.

Our classes work in small groups which helps develop and build children's confidence. We also help children to develop good posture, balance, co-ordination and grace.

We offer children the opportunity to complete tests to progress onto new grades and receive certificates for the skills, steps and dances that they learn. We offer certificates, medals and trophies for effort and attendance each year. We put on performances and shows for different charity events which usually run every 1-2 years. We like to praise the children for effort and enthusiasm.

Class places are subject to available classes and staffing levels. When a place becomes available within a suitable age group, the child who is at the top on the list will be offered the place. Priority will be given to children with siblings already in the dance group whenever possible.

We have groups which children are placed in according to their age and ability. Please trust our years of experience for class placement.

Dress attire/Dancewear:

It is important for mobility as well as checking proper alignment during class that your children wear appropriate clothes; We suggest a leotard and skirt with tights or leggings. Our Class colours are light pink for Primary- Grade 1, Lilac for Grades 2-3, Navy/Burgundy for Grades 4-5 and Black/Purple for Adults. No jewellery should be worn to class for your child's own safety as well as the safety of others. Hair should be pulled off the neck and away from the face i.e bun or ponytail.

Dance Shoes:

When purchasing dance shoes for your child it is of great importance that they are sized accuraty and correctly. Certain dance shoes are sized lower or higher than the actual shoe size therefore it is recommended you ask for assistance when purchasing them. Ballet shoes are normally one size larger than ordinary shoes, tap and jazz shoes are as ordinary shoes.

We do not  do exams.

Step up dance group is a small dance group founded in 1999 by mother and daughter Debbie Holmes and Rebecca Mason. Both Debbie and Rebecca have studied with the Royal Academy of Dance (RAD) and The Imperial Society of Dancing (ISTD). The dance group was originally called Deborah Holmes Dance Classes and Debs Tappers and taught mainly tap dancing to children and adults. Debbie and Rebecca have preformed in many song and dance shows including; Stepping out, Oliver, Merry Widow, Godsell and the One Production at Cardiff St David's hall. The class later went on to teach ballet and jazz and had two successful shows - Dancetastic and Snow White. In 2007 the Step up Dance Group name came into use and a new class combining Tap, Ballet and Modern Theatre dance was started for children 7 plus. Debbie also started adult classes and they continued to have more successful shows raising money for charities (Children in Need, Comic Relief and Ty- Hafan) these shows included - Easter Parade, Summer Heat, Sleeping Beauty, Nutcracker and Cinderella.

We plan to put on a production of Peter Pan in 2014.
